Now more and more women
and men are appreciating that a facelift could be the answer for them. The
“plastic” or pulled look that was the signature of a facelift of old is no
longer the result now being obtained. In fact, often no one can tell that
you have had a facelift, yet you can look up to ten years younger and, look
younger naturally.
A
facelift can improve the skin, smooth out deep cheek folds, jowls and loose,
sagging skin around the neck that is often associated with age.
A
facelift may be just what you need, as it can set back the clock of age,
improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening
underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your lower face and neck.
Typically,
Dr. Bond performs most facelifts on candidates who are in their
40s, 50s or 60s. In certain cases the procedure can be performed on older
individuals. However, best results are achieved with patients who still
have relatively good skin elasticity and a strong facial bone structure. In
preparation for facelift surgery, you will need to abstain from smoking one
month prior to the procedure and at least one month during the recovery
period in order to avoid complications.
Also,
consumption of aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs prior to facelift
surgery is not recommended, since these drugs are blood thinners, and may
lead to increased bleeding during the course of the facelift.
The Surgery
A
facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other facial procedures
such as an endoscopic
browlift,
eyelid lift,
or laser resurfacing around the mouth or eyes.
Performed under general anesthesia, a facelift, also known as rhytidectomy,
removes the excess skin and fatty tissue around the jaw and neck is removed
and the skin is pulled back to reveal a tighter, more youthful appearance.
The
surgery usually last approximately three hours followed by recovery which
lasts approximately two hours. You will be able to go home the same day as
surgery.
Although a facelift will improve and enhance the contour of your face and
jaw line, it will not correct sun or wind damage or fine wrinkles that have
developed on the skin’s surface. To treat these conditions, additional skin
care will be needed, which is available at our practice. See our skin care
and laser section of this site. These options can be discussed during your
initial consultation.

The Recovery
Bruising and swelling usually fades within two weeks and after a few days
you will be permitted to wear camouflage makeup if you deem necessary.
After about two weeks, most people find that they can return to work. As
with any facial surgery, healing continues for six to nine months until
every little irregularity settles and sensation in the skin and ears returns
to normal.
After
the recuperation period many of our patients say, “I wish I’d done it
sooner."
The
average facelift done today may last from 5 to 15 years, and follow-up
procedures can be performed to keep you looking as good as you can for even
many more years.
